How to Attach an Acoustic Guitar Strap: A Step-by-Step Guide
Step-by-step tutorial on how to attach an guitar strap to an acoustic guitar:
Putting a guitar strap on an acoustic guitar is slightly more complex than an electric guitar strap because many of these guitars only have one strap button at the bottom. But rest assured, this guide will explain all of the steps!
Do you have an electric guitar?
Read our our step-by-step article on how to attach an electric guitar strap.
Things You'll Need:
Guitar Strap: Typically has two attachment points.
Acoustic Guitar: May have one or two strap buttons.
String or Strap Adapter: if your guitar only has one strap button.
All set? Let's jump on the detailed guide on how to put on an acoustic guitar strap:
Step 1: Locate the Strap Button(s)
Most acoustic guitars feature a single strap button at the base. A few might have an additional button near the neck heel (where the neck joins the body). If your guitar has just one strap button, you'll need a string or strap adapter to connect the other end near the headstock.
Step 1A: Adjust the Strap Length
Use the strap's adjustment feature to find a comfortable length. If you have a tail style adjustment, it's important to adjust before attaching to guitar. Stand up and hold the guitar in its playing position to check the strap's length.
Step 2: Fasten the Strap to the Base Button
Find the opening on one side of the strap, and insert the opening over the bottom strap button on the guitar, usually at the base of the body.
Make certain the strap's opening is securely attached to the button. Sometimes the amp jack is at the center of the bottom strap button and you will need to finagle it over to be secure. Generally we don't recommend cutting the leather straps holes to be larger since leather inherently will stretch with time. So if your guitar strap ends are leather, try your best to stretch them over the endpin.
Step 3A: Fasten to the Neck Button (If Present)
If your acoustic guitar has a second strap button by the neck heel: pull the opening on the other end tab over the strap button. Verify that both ends are firmly in place by tugging and moving strap around a little.
Step 3B: Fasten to the Headstock (If Only One Button)
If your guitar has just one button at the base, you'll fasten the other end of the strap near the headstock.
Select a sturdy shoelace (preferably nylon), piece of sturdy string or leather, or a strap adapter made for this purpose like our Copperpeace Leather Acoustic Guitar Strap Loop:
When you're attaching a Copperpeace guitar strap to a guitar with only one endpin, the acoustic loop allows you to properly reinforce the strap and guitar. It's also easy to remove if needed by loosening the metal Chicago screw.
If you're using a shoelace or string, thread it through the button hole opening on the top end of the strap. Securely knot the string around the headstock between the nut and the tuning pegs and make sure to thread under the strings. Also make sure the knot is tight to prevent it from slipping or coming undone.
Bonus pro tips:
SECURE: Make sure the strap is snug on the button(s) and tied securely at the headstock if using a string. We recommend Nylon string or laces as it is one of the stronger materials available.
Think about using strap locks or security ties for additional security, particularly for live performances.
ADD A SECOND BUTTON: If your guitar has only one strap button on the bottom, and you are willing to drill an extra button, then consider visiting your local guitar shop and see if they can add a second strap button. It will make your life a lot easier and can sometimes be more comfortable.
And you're all set! This configuration will provide you with a comfortable, hands-free playing experience.
